military General in India Sir James Outram Carte de Visite photgraph dating from the the early 1860's.
General in India SIR JAMES OUTRAM by KILBURN. Sir James Outram (1803-1863), 1st Baronet. A carte-de-visite portrait of Sir James Outram, British general in the military and political service of the East India Company. While in Khandesh, Outram recruited the first corps from the Bhil robber tribes. He was political agent in Gujarat (1835-38) and fought in the First Afghan War. While political agent in Sind he opposed Napierâe(tm)s policy towards its emirs. He was appointed resident at Satara (1845) and at Baroda (1847). As resident at Lucknow he carried out the annexation of Oudh (1856), of which he became the first chief commissioner. He served in the Persian War (1856-57) and played an important part of the suppression of the Indian Mutiny (1857).The photograher is William Kilburn of 222, Regent Street, London, identified by his backplate verso on the mount. Kilburn worked first as a successful and highly accomplished daguerreotypist. He operated from this address between 1856 and 1864.
This item is is in nice condition with minor marking to the bottom right border. It is 10.4cm x 6.2cm across.
